Will M&A Activity Boost PowerShares Dynamic Biotech & Genome ETF? [view article]
I agree that there will be continued play in the sector given the desperation of the majors to develop their own drugs internally to offset the massive patent expirations occurring over the next few years.

Interestingly, there's a pretty strong seasonality to the biotech sector and we're still in the trough. Generally such trends are spotted quickly and evaporate due to efficient markets within a couple years, but this one's still in place it seems (I had used BBH as my proxy due to longer tenure, but trade with XBI due to better representation of the sector and less reliance on AMGN, DNA).

The sector outperforms big time in the late fall/winter on a pretty routine basis:

Jim Cramer's Mad Money Lightning Round Picks, 7/24/07 [view article]
    July 28th, saturday
The market goes down again, and low and behold Cramer Touts 'nstk' again for the 17 time.
Success and Power sometimes leads to ones downfall. And in the case of 'nstk', their past record literally stinks.
Their earnings stink and growth, return on equity, and managements effectiveness is sub par but most important
they're past record with Fda and big Pharma's are disappointing to say the least.
But there Cramer stands on his soap box touting the death out of Nastech.
Why? There are companies far advanced in autism, obesity, and RNAI period than 'nstk'.
Shareholders who bought nstk 11 years ago at $20 dollars are still in the Red!
Shareholders who bought last year at $19 are still in the Red!
After 24 years Jim Cramer are you telling shareholders that this is a fairy tale story in the making?
    A complete turnaround for nstk?
A 360 and Fda approvals without any hitches like Big Pharma's get all the time?
Your success & power has gone to your head unless there is something not disclosed, but that would be illegal, right JIM?

    July 27th,
Now that the market dropped over 300 points yesterday, Do you think Cramer is officially done TOUTING "NSTK?
I think so, after all in 12 days the rotten earnings report comes out.
And the stock price should rightfully test new lows like I've said for the past
3 weeks. This is one stock shareholders love to suffer with!

Screening for Potential Buyout Targets [view article]
I'm with you James, this one shouldn't have passed the debt to equity screen. As an anecdotal story, I used to work for a bank that paid over $100,000 per month for one of the most respected quant models in the industry. After several months, it was discovered that one of the factors in the model (9 month earnings momentum) was completely wrong! That's why I never rely totally on quant models and stocks screens. They're just a starting point, and should be re-tested regularly and followed up with detailed fundamental analysis. Thanks for bringing this to our attention! Reply

Curious as to how a copany like HLS would pass the debt to equity screen. It has no equity. Reply

Ralph- This is an art more than a science (I build a screen like this every couple months and I use slightly different factors every time). The goal is to figure out which companies will be the next takeover targets before there is actually any public information. If you want concrete numbers, try market capitalization between $500 million and $8 billion (this seems to be the sweet spot for a lot of buyouts), debt to equity less than 0.5 (in reality the lower the better), and positive cash flow consisting mostly of cash flow from operations (again, the more the better). Once you’ve got your list, try to think like a private equity firm. If you wanted to make a ton of money, which firm would you acquire? If you want more concrete numbers, check out CNBC’s 13 factor takeover target profile: (www.portfoliochallenge...).

It would be helpful to know exactly what factors you used to generate this screen. Can you be more specific than "companies with small or mid market capitalizations (large caps are often too big to be bought out), low debt ratios (so the acquirer can add more debt to pay for the aquisition), high cash flows (to pay down the new debt), and a variety of management issues (room for improvement)"?
